Activities Your Golden Can Participate In

The majority of our puppies go to family homes, where their only job is to be a member of the family. We are extremely proud to have so many amazing families that have gotten their Golden Retriever from us.

Sometimes families get interested in some of the dog sports that are available for Canadian Kennel Club registered Golden Retrievers. On this page you will be able to read about some of these activities.

Obedience

We strongly encourage every puppy owner to attend puppy socialization classes (usually when puppy is 12 weeks old) and then enroll in a Novice/Manners class (usually around 6 months of age), this helps ensure the right step towards a well mannered pet and provides structured socialization lessons that are so very important to an impressionable puppy/adolescent. Some people get 'bitten by the bug' and wish to continue on and maybe enter a CKC licensed Obedience Trial.

Rally-O

Rally-O was developed by Charles L. Kramer as a less-formal alternative to regular obedience. Instead of a set pattern of exercises, the judge creates a course by placing signs at different stations. Each sign tells the handler which exercise is required at the station.

Tracking

CKC tracking events are the competition form of canine search and rescue. These Tracking events provide training for dogs and their handlers to meet some human needs for tracking and finding lost humans or other animals, as well as, demonstrating the extremely high level of scent capability that dogs possess.

Working Certificate

The working certificate is another way of testing the working ability of your dog. As with hunt tests the dogs are marked against a standard. The tests are designed to assess a dog's natural abilities such as marking, memory of fall, intelligence, desire, perseverance, nose and courage.

Conformation

Conformation shows (aka Dog Shows) are for the evaluation of breeding stock. There are several classes within each breed to be judged, dogs entered in the class are judged against one another on how closely they conform to the breed standard. The winner of each class then moves on to the Winners Class, it is the winner of this class where Championship points can be obtained.
